Two Months With Baby Joaquin

My little baby is a whole two months old this week. I can't believe it's already two months, but I can't believe it's only been two months. Know what I mean? Joaquin is growing so fast and when I say fast, I mean chubby. We have his two month check up this week so we'll see how many pounds he's packed on. I'm guessing he's around 13-15 pounds. He's a chunkers and I just love his jiggly legs that look like they have rubber bands all up and down them and his chubby cheeks that I can't stop kissing. He's eating a whopping 4 oz of breast milk or formula each feeding and any less he screams like...well, a baby.

Another fav of mine is hearing him coo and ahh throughout the day. Sometimes I'll even get a loud ahh like he's trying to establish his roar as a human being. Primetime for chats and smiles is morning time and it really takes the edge off of my zombie-mommy state. He is a better conversationalist than a lot of people I've encountered and I can just googoo and gaagaa with him all day! It literally melts my heart every time.

And the question on every one's mind, how is baby boy sleeping? I feel so blessed that he is slowly but surely sleeping longer stretches of time during the nights. Since Week 2, we tried establishing a bedtime routine. I knew he wouldn't follow it just yet, but I wanted to create it early on so that all three of us could get used to some kind of bedtime routine.

His Bedtime Routine: We feed him his dinner anywhere from 7:00-9:00 pm depending on when he's hungry. On some nights, we will give him a warm bath and a lotion/baby oil massage. Most of the time he digs his baths but there are certainly those times where he screams his head off, particularly when it's time to rinse his hair. Then, I swaddle him tightly and rock him to sleep in the rocking chair while Hubby reads a bedtime story. We put on the sound machine (Joaquin enjoys the "crashing waves" channel) and he'll either fall right to sleep or he'll wiggle like a worm for about a minute and then fall asleep. He'll wake up around 1:00 or 2:00 am to eat, fall right to sleep and wake up again at around 4:00 or 5:00 am to eat again and try to chat it up, then fall asleep. I don't give in to playing with him at that hour because one, I'm half asleep, and two, I don't want him to think it's play time. He'll sleep again until about 7:00 am and that's when our day officially begins. He's a good napper as well, which has allowed me to nap, clean, or blog during the day. I'm one lucky momma! ::knock on wood::

As for me, the first month was definitely trying and was filled with hormone imbalances, c-section recovery, the lack of sleep, and my battle with breastfeeding. I felt so guilty that I wasn't "loving it" like people expected me to....like I expected to. My mommy friends reassured me that what I  was feeling was normal. The Baby Blues came and went.

But I'm so excited to report that most of that has passed and I truly, wholeheartedly love it. I love my little baby boy to pieces and I just love being a mother. Sure, there is still the lack of sleep (oh, how I miss sleep!), the hormone imbalances (sorry, Hubby), and my battle with breastfeeding pumping, but when I see my little Joaquin smile at me, my heart just melts to the floor. The good moments with my son outweigh the bad. I don't even mind poopy diapers...that has to say something!

As for my body, I am amazed at how resilient it truly is. I mean, don't get me wrong, I still have a few stretch marks, a very ugly c-section scar, and flab in some places I've never had before, but for the most part I am back to normal. My pre-pregnancy weight was about 130 lbs and while I was pregnant, I ate everything in sight and swelled so much from the summer heat that I gained 50+ lbs putting me at about 180 lbs. Right now, I am down to 145 lbs thanks to breastfeeding, my mother's genes, and not having much of an appetite. I've taken a few walks and plan to start some strength training soon. I don't care about losing all the weight, but I want to be fit and strong.

Before. During. After

Overall, things are amazing. My son is amazing. My husband is amazing. My dog is amazing. I'm the luckiest girl in the world.

The Hills are Alive, with the Sound of Hiking

And what does hiking sound like, you say?

"Why did we choose the hard path?"
"My thighs are buuurning!"
"Are we almost to the top?"
"Is that a SNAKE?"
"How come those old Asian ladies are passing us up?"

Last week, my friend Grace asked me to go hiking with her. The Lazy in me wanted to say no, but I think my couch needed a break from my BUH-DONK. Extra emphasis on the DONK.
Anywho- I said yes (obviously) and we had a grand old time...except for my left buttcheek and thigh, it wanted me dead and I know it.

I packed what I thought was necessary. But it turns out that when you are hiking up a mountain, an extra hand sanitizer in your bag feels like you're carrying a family of Koala bears on your back. I wanted to chuck my mini-bag off the cliff but apparently there are rules against that.

Hey! Look who remembered their inhaler this time!
Upon arrival, the clouds were covering the mountain, so I thought it would be cake. As the clouds parted, I realized that I might die today.

There was a cute little brook that marked the beginning of our journey. So peaceful and serene. We were ready to tackle the hill!
Then we found this crazy animal and we let him come along with us. We figured he would be able to carry us if we got hurt or something. Just kidding, he can't carry us, his noodle arms would buckle and we'd all plunge to our deaths.(I keed Richard! Your muscles can go up against any woman body builder.)

We complained climbed 2.5 miles all the way up and the view was breath taking!
I even met a little friend on the way! He was a fast little booger!
Even though we started our climb up the mountain around 8 in the morning, the sun burned off one layer of shirts for all of us. HOT! It had to be in the 80's or 90's!

Finally at the top, we came to a little tiny hut with two benches. I vote for a pool and an air conditioned ice cream stand, but that's just me.

Kidding aside, I had a great time with two of my buddies. It was hard, but we made it. I never hiked like this before and I felt strong when we finished. It was a challenge and we completed it! Even though I couldn't sit down on the toilet when I got back home because my thighs were mad at me, it was totally worth it!

The 2.5 miles down the hill was very scenic. Grace described it as a forest scene from Snow White.

And this is the spot where we Yelped a place to eat (which I will post tomorrow! Such a cute place we found). Ahhh, memories.
  • Hiking...yay or nay?
  • Would you like to come with me next time? I need someone to hold my bag.
  • Seriously, I'm going again...I'm ready for these hills!

Resolutions 2011 Revisited

It's been four months since I made my New Year's Resolutions. I need to revisit them...because I forgot them. I've been busy. I've been doing other things. I have work to do. Umm... are those enough legit excuses to make you believe that I'm sorry? I can think of more, just give me about 2 hours.

My  2011 Resolutions:

Strong Me:
1. Sign up and RUN (Not run/walk) at least 2 5Ks. I signed up and completed 2 races. One: Angels Fun Run and Two: Donate Life 5K. I didn't completely RUN them, but I'm getting there. I'll mark this as~In Progress
2. Get active at least 3 times a week. Does napping count as being active? How about eating ridiculous amounts of butter? How about...wait why are you looking at me like that? I'll mark this as~GET ON IT JOANNA!

Foodie Me:
3. Add more fruits and Vegetables to every meal. I'm doing pretty well! When summer is here, it'll be on like Donkey Kong. I'll mark this as ~ CHA-CHING!

4. Continue cooking healthy and yummy dinners each day. If you've been following me I'm sure you'd agree that I'm doing pretty well on this one. I'll mark this as ~ BADA-BING!

Spiritual Me:
5. Make God my priority. I'm doing ok with this one. Not great. Not even good. Just ok. I am so happy that there are more friends that the Lord is placing it my path to guide me though. Here are some great blogs that I have been reading that speaks to my spiritual self.
6. Read my daily devotionals. I'm failing miserably on this one... I'll mark this one as~ DOH!

Intellectual Me:
7. Watch less TV and read books. I'm 50/50 on this one. I'm 50- HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER is the best show EVER and 50- I'm on my 3rd book this year and 50 blogging like a maniac. I know that's more than the 50/50 but it's mine and I can do what I want. I'll mark this one as~In Progress.

Currently reading and LOVING!

8. Be PRESENT. I am trying my best to stay present and involved in what I'm doing at the moment. This is good. I'll mark this one as~In Progress

The Wifey Me:
9. Be his friend.I've been making it a point to talk to him about HIS day. We watch HIMYM every night at 7pm and give each other high fives every day. We laugh together. We have heart to hearts. We enjoy each other's company. He's my bestest friend in the whole wide wo-yld. I'll mark this one as~ You're doin' it baby!

10.Be Patient-I'm trying REALLY hard. I hope it's working. Hubby might have to comment below about how I'm doing.I'll mark this one as ~Let's hope he comments!

The Friend Me:
11. Cultivate Strong Friendships: I've been making time and making more of an effort to visit my friends and invite them out instead of waiting for them to invite me. I'm having a lot of fun and trying new things. I am working on building my very own "Saved By The Bell" type friendships if you know what I'm sayin' I'll mark this one as ~ In Progress!

12. Make more of an effort: I've been trying really hard to keep in contact with the friends that matter to me the most. Whether it's through text message, email, or honestly asking and showing that I care about how their life is going when I'm with them, I'm trying my best. I could do better though. I'll mark this one as ~ In Progress!

  • Did you make resolutions?
  • Tell me one and how your doing!
  • If you didn't make one, make ONE now and tell me what it is!

This ain't no walk in the park

Happy Hump Day!! We're halfway done with our week and I'm feelin' gewd...

I heart planners and color coded tasks. Call me crazy, but keeping my week organized in this manner helps me keep my BRAIN organized too. Did I do everything listed so far? No. Did I try? YES. Am I going to hate myself forever? Nope

Hello Kitty got mah back... the back of my planner that is. Adorable no?

So I started off my day stressing about a teacher observation I was supposed to have today. A team of administrators and curriculum reps were supposed to come watch me teach, but I was disappointed to see only ONE guy showed up and stayed for 2.2 seconds.  Don't get me wrong, my nerves were calm after I found out that they were not coming... but I wore my good clothes and everything. Sheesh.

Here's a picture of my classroom. My sixth period boys just  left before I took it. You should feel so lucky that you cannot smell the stinkiness that clouded this room. I had to GET OUT of there.

And do this!

If you cannot decipher my clue, I worked out today. Unfortunately I do not have the right shoes to put my Nike iPod thingy in, so I just have to walk on it. It's all good. The walking club and I.... which consists of me and T.... walked for almost 40 minutes today.

We made two trips around the school. We saw beautiful trees with fall leaves... and some students.

We walked on the main road so we saw lots and lots of cars... probably not the best place to be breathing, but we work with what we have.

When I got home, I took Sonic on another walk, then plopped myself on the couch. I watched "Leap Year" with Amy Adams. SUPER cute.

Then I made a simple dinner.

Shhh! Don't tell him about all the veggies and whole wheat. I added what I could to the jar sauce...because I'm stubborn like that. I need to make it homemade somehow.

Dashed in some Italian Seasonings because... well... you know...

Sauce and Spinach time!

Tossed in the Tortellini

Made some ::air quotes::  garlic bread

Plate, picture, and serve...

Bomb dot com.

During dinner, Hubs let me know that Tortellini is supposed to represent Venus, the goddess of fertility. CRAP, AND we had Prego sauce? ::covers ears:: LA LA LA LA.... I'm not hearing baby speak right now.

Hubs loved dinner, surprisingly. Afterwards we both had a mad craving for dessert, but I told him to wait until tomorrow! My DESSERT THURSDAY is coming with the quickness!!

Comment question of the day:
Do you have a favorite quick go to meal for mid week laziness?
